IP ratings explained: what IP68 and IP69K actually mean

Machine lighting lives a rough life: mud, rain, washdown days and the occasional pressure washer at close range. Whether a lamp survives that is largely captured in its IP rating. Here is what the code means, and what the manufacturer of our bars actually says about its lamps.
How to read an IP code (general knowledge)
IP stands for Ingress Protection, standardised in IEC 60529. The first digit rates protection against solid objects and dust, from 0 (none) to 6 (dust-tight). The second digit rates protection against water: 7 means the unit survives temporary immersion, 8 continuous immersion under conditions the manufacturer specifies. The K-suffixed ratings, such as IP69K, come from a related standard written for road vehicles (ISO 20653): IP69K adds resistance to high-pressure, high-temperature spray, the closest a lab test gets to a pressure washer.
What that means in practice (general knowledge)
IP68 and IP69K test different things, and one does not imply the other. IP68 is about sustained immersion: a lamp sitting in water. IP69K is about short, violent jets: washdown. A lamp on a machine roof rarely gets submerged, but it gets washed constantly, which is why washdown resistance matters for this application. Note that an IP rating describes a new, undamaged unit in a laboratory: seals age, and mechanical damage voids any rating in practice.
What the factory says about its lamps
The factory's maintenance documentation, which we translate from Swedish and archive, states that all its lamps are IP-rated to withstand water and moisture. Where the factory publishes a specific IP class for a specific lamp, you will find it on the product page as a manufacturer specification. Ratings the documentation does not state, we deliberately do not fill in.
Why the same documentation warns against pressure washers
The same maintenance sheet is explicit: never spray a concentrated jet directly at, or use high pressure on, the lamps and other electronic equipment. That is not a contradiction of the IP rating; it is the manufacturer protecting service life. Repeated close-range high-pressure hits stress seals, cable glands and connectors far beyond normal weather, and a rating test says nothing about ten years of weekly washdowns. The advice: clean the machine as usual, but keep the lance at a sensible distance from lamps, connectors and the loom.
The short version
Read the first digit for dust, the second for water; treat IP69K as washdown resistance, not a licence to blast electronics at close range. Check the product page for the rating the manufacturer actually publishes for your lamp, and follow the cleaning rules for the anodised bar itself, which have their own chemistry constraints.
