Mounting principles: original bolts, clamps and spacer blocks

A bar that fits properly mounts without drama; that is the point of model-specific engineering. The manufacturer's product sheets contain a handful of mounting principles that come back across the range. They are short, practical and worth reading before you put a spanner on anything.

Use the machine's original mounting points

The recurring instruction in the product sheets is to use what the machine already offers. For roof bars this means the bar is mounted with the machine's original roof bolts, or in existing holes in the roof, without drilling into the cab. Where a model needs them, the sheet describes spacer blocks: spacer blocks and brackets are mounted on the roof first, and the bar is then bolted onto those brackets. The order matters: level the brackets first, then hang the bar.

Protect the finish when fitting clamps

For bars fixed with clamp brackets, the sheets include a detail that says a lot about how these bars are meant to be treated: use packaging plastic between clamp and bar while fitting, so the clamps do not scratch the surface finish. The anodised or painted surface is not only cosmetic, it is the corrosion protection. Keep the shipping plastic; it has a second job.

What a bar must never be used for

The safety section of every product sheet is unambiguous, and we repeat it here deliberately. The products are intended solely as fixtures for lighting and warning systems. Under no circumstances may a bar be used for towing or as a lifting device. It is also not a guard rail, a handle or a step. An aluminium light bar is engineered to carry lamps through vibration and weather, not to carry a person or a load. Climbing on one is how bars, lamps and ankles get damaged.

Check before first use, and keep checking

The maintenance documentation adds the final principle: before use, check that the lighting works and that the bar, wiring and mountings show no damage. Damaged or broken parts must be repaired or replaced; a cracked mount is a vibration problem that only gets worse. On bars with a Plexiglas rain guard, damage can create sharp edges, so handle a damaged guard with care.
